Allies in Hand Therapy

This week, we would like to feature Allies in Hand Therapy; one of our first and long-standing partners. Allies in Hand Therapy is a 1500 square foot state-of-the-art occupational therapy practice located in Wayne, New Jersey. Our friends and family members were successfully treated at Allies in Hand Therapy and we’re very grateful for both the personal and business relationship we have. The practice is owned and operated by Priti Shah, an exceptional occupational therapist who has over 30 years of hands-on experience in treating patients. Priti is also a Certified Hand Therapist and a Certified Lymphedema TherapistΒ which are very necessary, unique specialties that we will cover more extensively below.

Occuaptional Therapy vs Physical Therapy

Although there is some overlap, occupational therapy is different from physical therapy and since this is a common question, we’d like to briefly highlight the difference. Occupational therapy deals more with addressing upper extremity inadequacies. While physical therapy focuses on restoring one’s gross motor skills (larger movements that require big muscle groups such as jumping and running), occupational therapy focuses more on restoring one’s fine motor skills (synchronization of smaller muscles such as writing, using utensils, and grooming). Basically, the objective of an occupational therapist is to help optimize a patient’s independence and allow them to get through their job tasks and daily-living tasks with ease.

Why Choose Allies in Hand Therapy?

Allies in Hand Therapy treats virtually all pathologies and ailments of the hands, arms, and shoulder. Some common reasons patients visit the center is trauma to the upper extremities, post-surgical treatment, pain syndromes, tendon injuries, fractures, joint replacements, nerve injuries, carpal tunnel, lymphedema, arthritis, etc. The common modalities used at the center are fluidotherapy, electric stimulation, ultrasound, dry needling, kinesiotape, phototherapy, graded motor imagery, and custom splinting.

Priti Shah utilizes a comprehensive and progressive treatment regimen to restore patients back to their full healthy potential. Patients of the center are especially pleased with Priti’s know-how when it comes to hand therapy and lymphedema treatment. Let’s discuss what these certified specialties are all about.

Certified Hand Therapy

A certified hand therapist is a physical or occupational therapist with more than three years and 4000 hours of clinical experience treating the hands. The hand is a very complex and delicate structure. The multitude of bones, joints, cartilage, and muscles of the hand that move together in a unique way is an advanced science of its own. It is imperative that someone with a hand ailment see a professional who is highly competent in hand therapy, and therefore seeing a certified hand therapist is ideal.

Certified Lymphedema Therapy

Lymphedema is a condition where there is swelling and fluid buildup in the extremities (feet, ankles, legs, arms, or hands). It is typically a result of poorly functioning lymphatic system most commonly as a result of damage or removal of lymph nodes. The function of the lymphatic system is to properly circulate fluid in the body while collecting bacteria, viruses, and waste products. Although there is no cure for lymphedema, it can be effectively managed by a certified lymphedema therapist.

Sessions with Priti, typically involve an extensive evaluation where condition, goals, and treatment plan is thoroughly discussed. Priti then performs manual lymphatic drainage followed by compression bandaging, therapeutic exercises, and home-care instructions.
