Navigating the Value Alignment Problem in AI: My TEDx Experience
In February of 2024, I was contacted by the Director of Logistics and Engagement at TEDxCUNY with an invitation to run a workshop presentation on Artificial Intelligence. As a seasoned presenter on AI, I decided that the best topic to choose to present for the workshop and one I knew was quite interesting to people was the Value Alignment Problem in Artificial Intelligence. I felt honored to discuss one of the most pressing challenges in AI today: ensuring that these highly intelligent systems act in ways that are aligned with human morals, values, and ethics. It also seemed like a very needed discussion to have in a world where many companies are focused on competing for investment funds and just slinging AI products onto the masses without much safety and testing behind them.
The Thrill of TEDxCUNY
It was very exciting to partake in this event especially since being a part of a TEDx event has been a goal of mine for a while – I’ve always admired its vibrant community of thinkers, creators, and innovators, all eager to share ideas that push the boundaries of conventional thought. It was truly exhilarating to be in such a dynamic environment, surrounded by people who are as passionate about technology and its societal impact as I am.
From the moment I entered the workshop venue, I felt a rush of excitement. The room was filled with a diverse audience—from students and educators to professionals from various fields—all gathered to explore the transformative power of technology. The atmosphere was electric, filled with curiosity and a collective eagerness to learn. One of the attendees actually hooked me up with an excellent speaking opportunity in North Jersey a few months later.
Diving Into the Value Alignment Problem
My workshop focused on the Value Alignment Problem, a critical issue in the field of AI. As AI systems become more advanced, ensuring that their actions and decisions align with human values becomes increasingly complex. If left unchecked, misaligned AI could lead to unintended consequences, from biased decision-making to unethical behaviors that could harm individuals or society at large. We also discussed some of the more extreme, somewhat paranoid concerns folks have with regards to AGI and Artificial Super Intelligence.
Engaging with a Curious Audience
One of the highlights of the workshop was the interactive Q&A session. The audience’s questions were thoughtful and demonstrated a deep understanding of the complexities surrounding AI ethics. We delved into discussions about the ethical implications of autonomous AI systems, the challenges of creating a universal set of human values that AI could follow, and the role of global governance in regulating AI technology.
This engagement underscored the importance of open dialogue and education in the field of AI. It was clear that there is a growing awareness and concern about the ethical dimensions of AI, and I was grateful to be part of a conversation that could shape future developments in this space.
Reflections and Takeaways
Reflecting on the experience, I am both humbled and inspired. The Value Alignment Problem is not an easy issue to solve, but the enthusiasm and engagement from the audience at TEDxCUNY made me realize that there are many people that are taking the concerns seriously. It reminded me that there is a strong community of thinkers and doers committed to ensuring that AI benefits all of humanity, not just a select few.
Participating in a TEDx event was a fantastic experience that reinforced my belief in the power of shared knowledge and collaboration. I walked away from the event more convinced than ever that addressing the Value Alignment Problem is not just a technical challenge but a societal one, requiring input and effort from all of us.
Looking Ahead
Moving forward, I am excited to continue exploring these themes and contributing to the ongoing conversation about AI ethics. I believe that through collaboration, education, and a commitment to ethical principles, we can navigate the challenges of AI and harness its potential for good.
Thank you to TEDxCUNY for providing a platform to discuss such critical issues, and to everyone who attended the workshop and participated in the discussion. Together, we can work towards a future where AI aligns with the values that make us human… the tricky thing is, we as humans don’t agree on morals and values, so how do we ensure that these powerful machines will…
